1935年11月，国民党政府宣佈实行法币政策，禁止银元在市面流通。随后发行可在市场上流通的21种版别的镍币；但其实早在1935年初，民国政府已经委派美国费城造币厂铸造伍分，拾分，廿分的镍币每种11枚，送交国民政府呈递样品。国民政府时期制币事宜多与美国方面往来，如中央造币厂之筹建，开工后之管理等皆得力于美方。“船洋”模具自始至终，全数由费城造币厂供应。民国二十四年镍币试製亦由该厂为之，民国二十五年起由上海中央造币厂生产。

1935年国民党政府实行法币政策后，曾发行伍分、拾分、二十分和半圆镍币，民国时期的镍质辅币不仅在1935年后作为“法币”的辅币流通于市面，而且直到1948年8月19日，国民党政府发行“金圆券”以后，又作为金圆券的辅币流通。镍币是币制改革的产物，以镍替代贵金属银，在阻止西方列强掠夺中国白银方面起到重要作用。      

此枚是1936年（民国二十五年）发行的中华民国二十五年镍币，于民国二十五年上海中央造币厂铸造，是民国时期镍质辅币,中心铸有孙中山先生的侧面像，边缘内上镌中文书“中华民国二十五年”字样,铸有古布图，左右有币值“廿分”，直线边齿，成色89%；将钱币背面改成古布图案设计的目的是财政部计画发行减重、降色银币时与标准船洋区分用。钱币正反面边缘饰方雷纹，凹槽边。藏品品相完整，包浆自然，字体、边齿清晰，磨损较小，具有极高的收藏价值和经济价值。
