吴昌硕，初名俊，又名俊卿，字昌硕，又署仓石、苍石，多别号，常见者有仓硕、老苍、老缶、苦铁、大聋、缶道人、石尊者等。浙江省孝丰县鄣吴村（今湖州市安吉县）人。晚清民国时期著名国画家、书法家、篆刻家，“后海派”代表，杭州西泠印社首任社长，与厉良玉、赵之谦并称“新浙派”的三位代表人物，与任伯年、蒲华、虚谷合称为“清末海派四大家”。

溪山清隐图正是吴昌硕艺事创作的鼎盛时期。书中近岸处杂树婆娑，空立的茅亭与湖上孤棹隐者遥遥相对，湖面平静如洗，唯口水出乱石迭置，似可闻流水淙淙作响； 起伏的云山中，隐约可见三两处楼舍。此作不施色彩，而墨韵淋漓，用笔肆意而不狂放，清冷中蕴含明净滋润的气息，令人似见满山葱翠蓊郁。吴昌硕作山水往往因诗而发兴，书中丘壑尽美，空灵幽谧，仿若世外桃源，正是令「隐者日心醉」之境。是年重九日，吴昌硕被推选为西泠印社社长，此作绘于九月望，即履职后数日，心情舒畅豁然可见想见，故此作写来恬静明朗，实为精心营构。

It was the heyday of Wu Changshuo's artistic creation. In the book, the trees are whirling near the shore, and the empty thatched pavilion is far away from the hidden one on the lake. The lake is as calm as a bath, but only the slobber-like stones are placed on top of each other, so that you can hear the murmtering of the running water. Two or three buildings can be seen in the undulating cloud hills. This work does not apply color, and the ink dripping, with the pen is wanton but not wild, the cold contains bright and moist breath, a person seems to see the lush lush mountains. Wu Changshuo's landscape poetry is often due to the development of the book, the hills and ravines in the United States, empty and secluded, like a paradise, is the "recluse day" of the environment. On the ninth day of the year, Wu Changshuo was elected president of Xiling Seal Society. This painting was made in September, that is, a few days after his performance, he suddenly saw that he was in a relaxed mood. Therefore, he wrote to be quiet and clear, which was carefully constructed.
