在我国最早发现的鸡血石产地当属浙江昌化玉岩山一带，其开发始于明朝早期，盛行于清代乾隆时期，至今已有600多年的历史。在清乾隆年间编撰的《浙江通志》中有记载：“昌化县产图章石，红点若朱砂，亦有青紫如玳瑁，良可爱玩，近则罕得矣。”说的就是昌化鸡血石。

　　鸡血石以其美丽、晶莹、稀少，历来被誉为“石后”、“印石公主”、“章石皇后”。更是与寿山石、田黄石、巴林石并列，享有“四大印石”的美誉。 清朝康熙、乾隆、嘉庆等皇帝都十分喜爱鸡血石，刻石为章，将其作为宝玺的主要章料。上世纪70年代初，周恩来总理更是将昌化鸡血石对章作为国礼馈赠来自日本的贵宾，之于此，国内也掀起一股收藏鸡血石的风暴，而现在鸡血石产量相当有限，由于资源的不可再生性，使得鸡血石市场价格经久不衰。
