光绪年间福建省所需机制钱币均由广东省供应，因路途遥远，往返费时，运汇费用多，劳民伤财。福建都督准商人孙利用集股购机，就在福建当地试铸。后来户部令，不准商人附搭股本或自行铸造。后拟委派福建籍浙江候补知县孙葆办理，由善后局、盐道筹款续铸。后因局库支绌，无款拨给而作罢。于光绪二十六年（1900年），委藩司张曾督办局务，办理机器厂房、物料等事宜。其鼓铸费用均由该司、道设法筹款。铸成后发行流通。福建省官方自接办后改为“福建银元局”。往后所铸机制币，其币上端均书“福建官局造”，与他省截然不同。

近日征集到的福建官局造光绪元宝每枚当制钱十文铜币一枚（如上图），此钱币，直径为28.2毫米，重为8克。钱币正面直读为“光绪元宝”，外环珠圈，上缘纪地文字为“福建官局造”。下缘纪值文字为“每枚当钱十文”；反面中央铸"飞龙"图及珠圈，上下均有英文。铜元整体完美，图文清晰，品相完好，为珍稀收藏品。此币包浆厚重，质地浑朴有实感非常少见，市场价值极高，具有非常大的收藏和投资价值。为中国机制币中的少有珍品。

福建官局造铜币是中国所有龙洋图案钱币中，工艺最精湛，雕工最完美，浮雕感最强烈的品种，镜面平整光滑，纹饰的相贯线显得非常清晰，该系列钱币铸造精美，字口、纹路和边齿深峻，完全是国外铸造的样币风格，具有鲜明的历史特色。
