He Dehua, a contemporary artist, is often known as “Level I” national artist and designer. He was born to a Manchu family in Chengdu, Sichuan Province. And He graduated in the year 2001 from People’s Liberation Army Academy of Arts. He now works for many reputable art associations and committees of which he himself remains a member and a former advisor, including China Artists Association, China Institute of Stage Design, Sichuan Artists Association, People’s Liberation Army Awarding Council and Chengdu Zhanqi Art Society. His oil paintings are highly realistic and often tinged with Tibetan culture. He is no stranger to Tibet: in the 1970s. he began his journey to the west and reached the very depth of Ali District and Tibet’s pastoral area and military region, where his imagination was stirred. He soon made a name for himself with his award-winning works favoured by National Art Museum of China and Hefner Gallery of New York. And many of his works had won huge popularity among patrons of art from Switzerland. His works cover a wide range of themes and ideas.
In 1983, He finished his picture Home at Bajin’s former home. This work was first published in Fuchun River Art Review, Volume 10, 1983. It’s worthwhile to note that Mr. Bajin had once sent a copy of this volume to his Japanese friend Minakami Tsutomu. And Mr. Minakami soon replied with a letter, the title of it being Bajin’s Ancestral Home——A Journey to Chengdu, published in the Spring Edition of a Japanese art journal Bungeishunju.
He’s oil painting, My Grandpa, earned him a decent reputation in the Sixth National Art Exhibition in 1984 and it soon became National Art Museum’s possession. During the exhibition, Wu Guanzhong wrote in his diary: ‘The creator of this little piece of artwork spared no effort in making it as real as possible…perhaps that quality is what distinguished his work, which is rich in both content and form and reflects his taste and understanding of beauty.” This remark can still be found in Art (Vol.11, 1984).
Flamboyant, another piece of oil painting by He, was completed in the year 1985. It was soon bought in 1987 and entered into the collections of GHK, an American company.
