Michael David was born in Reno, Nevada in 1954. His family relocated to Brooklyn, New York where he was raised. David received a B.F.A. from Parsons School of Design in 1976. He is classified as an abstract painter and is most widely known for his use of encaustic, a technique which incorporates pigment with heated beeswax. He has done a lot of work in mixed-media work as well, mainly with photography, figure painting and environmental sculpture.

David is the recipient of a Guggenheim Fellowship and awards from the National Endowment for the Arts, The American Academy of Arts and Letters, and The Edward Albee Foundations. His work may be found in the public collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Museum of Contemporary Art in Los Angeles, the Jewish Museum in New York, the Guggenheim Museum, and the Los Angeles County Museum of Art.
