奉天省造币厂是目前我国历史最悠久的造币厂，主要生产流通硬币、金银纪念币等。据记载，光绪二十二年，根据盛京将军依克唐阿的奏请，批准设立并筹建奉天机器局以铸造机制银币，从德国进口锅炉和以蒸汽机为动力的铸币机器，于光绪二十三年(1897年)奉天机器局正式建成。“奉天制造银元总局”的前身，是“奉天机器局”。

　　光绪二十四年至二十六年(1898-1900年)，曾先后附铸银币和机制铜钱。光绪二十六年(1900年)义和团运动爆发，奉天机器局毁于战火，后来应市面之需，奉天省在机器局原址重建造币厂，名为“奉天银元总局”，专产银币铜元。光绪二十九年七月(1903年)，厂竣开工，铸发银币及铜元。

　　在钱币收藏领域，经常会遇到这种情况，很多缺乏经验的新玩家总是很主观地认为各种古董、收藏品都是越老越值钱。但其实市场的反馈并不是这样的，有些很懂行情的资深玩家告诉笔者，例如汉代的“五铢”、唐代的“开元通宝”及北宋的“宣和通宝”等年代也算久远，但他们都堪称白菜价，一般很少人会看好。而像三孔布币、“壮泉四十”及不少清代的钱币少说也是按万、十万、百万起价的，“钱”景一片大好。

　　从明代崇祯年间至解放前夕，我国先后发行了640余种银币，其中，“奉天省造光绪元宝当制钱十文”、“奉天省造癸卯光绪元宝库平壹两银元”、“香港造上海壹两银元”、“湖北省造光绪七钱二分本省银元”及“孙中山像地球版壹元银元”为旧版银元中的一币难求的稀缺品。
