ZHANG Hui
ZHANG Hui, male, born in 1957 in ShangHai. ZHANG started to learn painting from his father ZHANG Qianyi (who followed Mr. LIN Fengmian) since he was a kid, and graduated in 1978 from Shanghai Arts and Crafts College. He went abroad to Japan and continued his studies in Tama Art University in 1987. Later he also got the certificate from the portrait studio of Shanghai Chinese Painting Academy. Zhang is now a member of Shanghai Painter’s Association, Lin Fengmian Art Society and also a painter of Shanghai Xiangshan Painting Academy.
In 1980, his comic work Daughter of the Sea won the second place of the 3rd National Comic Exhibition; in 1984, comic work Zhaoshu Tun was selected to the 6th National Fine Arts Exhibition; after 1987, his works have been displayed and awarded in various places in Japan and now been widely collected home and abroad.
ZHANG Hui started painting at a very young age. As the son of a LIN Fengmian follower, ZHANG has also been strongly influenced by LIN especially in his unique way of using lines to depict figures. In 1990s, ZHANG Hui travelled and lived in Japan when he fully absorbed the essence of Ukiyo-e and enriched his lady portraits with a layer of exoticness. Different from traditional techniques, ZHANG Hui have adapted the skills of western painting and emphasized the using of light in his works. This has not only brightened the traditional Chinese paintings with fresh colours, but also brought out the modernity in his pictures.
