作者介绍
Wong Chak-Hung (b.1963), a Hong Kong based artist, graduated at The Central Academy of Fine Arts, Beijing, China in 1988.
Wong Chak-Hung has for years taken the MTR mosaic as the oeuvre for his spiritual mediation of this bustling city. His squares and the MTR mosaics are all in the same size of 1:1; his paintings are all 100% comprising simulations of urban situations that his hyper-realistic counterparts can never dream of. He has an intention to use his work to play with the public space, create spatial encounter and develop such public form into an artistic medium of his own. The work has become one of his signature paintings on large-scale canvas, and on Chinese rice paper—a series that he has begun since 2000s.
Wong’s work has taken a new and realistic approach to explore the meaning of realism and abstraction; a perception of soul tranquility along with modern sentiment is delivered. A view of extreme realism is presented beyond the limits of imagination by toppling the inherent boundaries of realism and abstraction as well as wandering through the urban space. The indifferences and philosophical thoughts adopted in the traditional Chinese painting are mixed and integrated with the Western painting framework.
As the artist notes, “painting is a record of my mental performance and manifestation of our popular ideology”.
Wong’s works have been collected by the Hong Kong Culture Museum, University of Hong Kong, Fung Ping Shan Museum, Hong Kong Polytechnic University, Hong Kong Baptist University, among many others.
