加布里埃尔·莱斯特（Gabriel Lester，1972年生于阿姆斯特丹）是欧洲青年一代艺术家的代表人物，活跃于今天全球的当代艺术舞台。莱斯特的创作运用了多重媒介，譬如，电影、音乐、行为表演、装置、雕塑以及建筑。他的作品大多充满了氛围的渲染和知性，它们以这个时代的媒介、材质为基石展开，不少作品都精巧地改变了媒介以及其形式从达到艺术家对时空的转化。蜚声艺术世界且在多个艺术机构展出的作品《如何表演》代表了加布里埃尔·莱斯特创作中受电影的启发，在这件作品中，莱斯特延展了电影的疆域，以画面、人物的缺席为前提，仅仅借助人对视觉和阅读经验，创造了一部没有画面只有舞台灯光和背影声效、音乐的特殊“电影”。而受2006年釜山双年展邀请特约创作的《All Right》则延续了克里斯·马克(Chris Marker)等20世纪电影人的实践，从21世纪新的网络媒介和其相对应的文化背景出发重新定义了今天的“电影创作”。建筑空间的实验，亦是莱斯特创作中备受关注的一环。比较有代表性的作品《阿卡迪亚的忧郁》在一个特定的场域中再现了一个被静止的电影画面。
莱斯特在其艺术生涯中在全球不少知名的美术馆、双年展中展出，其中包括四方美术馆（南京），白南准艺术中心（韩国）、Boijmans van Beuningen(鹿特丹)、Gemeentemuseum(海牙)、蓬皮杜艺术中心(巴黎)、Wexner Center for the Arts(俄亥俄州)、Performa行为艺术双年展(纽约)、 德国卡塞尔文献展(dOCUMENTA 13)、Artists Space艺术家空间(纽约)、Moderna Museet 现代美术馆(斯德哥尔摩)、利物浦双年展(利物浦)、Stedelijk博物馆(阿姆斯特丹)、釜山双年展(釜山)、Baltic三年展, PS1(纽约)、Witte de With(鹿特丹)、 Rijksakademie(阿姆斯特丹)、 World Expo(汉诺威)等等。今年他将参加第19届悉尼双年展。
莱斯特的作品被不少欧美重要的艺术机构收藏，例如：Museum Boijmans van Beuningen,Stedelijk博物馆,Museum De Paviljoens, Almere, MUDAM, Fondation Musée d'ArtModerne Grand-Duc Jean, Rabobank Art Collection, 21CMuseum等等。2012年莱斯特与库哈斯/OMA以及一支跨界的精英团体合作设计联合国纽约总部的建筑。2013年提名Absolut艺术奖。
Born in 1972 in Amsterdam, Gabriel Lester is a representative figure among a young generation of European artists active on the international scene. Lester works across various disciplines including cinema, music, performance, installation, sculpture and architecture. Atmospheric and perceptual, many of Lester’s works evolve around the very nature of the media of our time. He transforms the space and time by meticulously altering the media and forms. Strongly inspired by cinema, Lester’s works challenge the reality of perception and draw on collective imagination through his dramatic theatrical illusions.
Gabriel Lester held solo shows at Minsheng Art Museum, Shanghai (2012), the Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen, Rotterdam (2011), the Bloomberg Space, London (2007), and Centre d’Art Neuchâtel (2001). He has also exhibited at many major museums and biennales, for instance, Sifang Art Museum (Nanjing), Nam June Paik Art Center (Yongin), Boijmans van Beuningen (Rotterdam), Gemeentemuseum (Den Haag), Centre Pompidou (Paris), Wexner Center for the Arts (Columbus, Ohio), Performa 09 (New York), Artists Space (New York), Moderna Museet (Stockholm), Liverpool Biennial (Liverpool), Stedelijk Museum (Amsterdam), Busan Biennial (Busan), Baltic Triennal, PS1 (New York), Witte de With (Rotterdam), Rijksakademie (Amsterdam), World Expo (Hannover), etc. Lester is going to the upcoming 19th Biennale of Sydney, 2014.
Lester’s work has been placed in many prestigious collections like Museum Boijmans van Beuningen, Stedelijk Museum, Museum De Paviljoens, Almere, MUDAM, Fondation Musée d'Art Moderne Grand-Duc Jean, Rabobank Art Collection, 21CMuseum, Louisville, United States. Lester collaborates with Rem Koolhaas/OMA and an interdisciplinary team on an architectural project at United Nations’ New York Headquarter. In 2012 Lester participated in the dOCUMENTA (13). He was also shortlisted for the 2013 Absolut Art Award.
